Complete leads the way in environmentally responsible Australian print solutions. As of 1 January 2021, Complete Colour Printing in Cheltenham, Victoria, will be 100% powered by renewable energy sources.

This is achieved in two ways:

  • by consuming power generated by our 200Kw LGC* (728-panel) rooftop solar power plant
  • drawing additional power in our peak periods from Environmental Resources Management (ERM) Power that is 100% GreenPower** Certified – providing comfort to our clients that the energy we consume from the grid has no impact on the environment

In addition, we send excess energy generated from our solar power plant back to the grid for others to utilise. That is what we like to call win-win-win.

GreenPower’s mission has three parts:

  1. Support the Australian renewable energy sector
  2. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation
  3. Provide consumer choice to purchase renewable energy anywhere on the grid

“We always aspire to be industry captains across everything we do,” says Managing Director Tim Michaelides.

“And GreenPower is doing the same in its industry. Being environmentally responsible not only aligns with our core values, but it also makes sense. Businesses have to stand up and make a difference against climate change and the other environmental threats we face.

“We were careful to build our 200Kw roof-top solar farm to match the usage we needed without wasting materials. And that means for certain periods of the year, we need to buy extra energy. Now, thanks to GreenPower, we can be 100% confident that any energy we use is also responsibly generated.”

“Prior to installing our Large Generation Solar Panel Plant late in 2017, we had worked with CSIRO to try and find a viable solution for over a decade. Eventually, we teamed up with long-term partner Beacon Group (under Beacon Energy Solutions) to make it happen, and NAB helped us fund the initial investment with its climate change finance program. It’s been a fantastic addition to our business.”

Alongside the solar farm, we run an eco-recycling solvent tank recovery system, we use vegetable-based ink and we only purchase paper that is sourced from well-managed forests certified to a credible standard. In October 2020, we passed another audit with flying colours – in ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environment) – certifying us as a trusted manufacturer.

“We’re a well-processed, system-orientated business,” says Director Geoff Lawyer.

“We believe in sustainable habits and return on investment. In order to live true to these beliefs, we have to minimise waste across every facet of the business; our systems drive our performance. We’ve taken a decision not to waste non-renewable energy sources, because we know we can generate our own and responsibly purchase any top-up we might require.

“Environmentally sound practices, such as waste reduction, responsible paper purchasing and reducing our raw material inputs and outputs, has a positive impact on each project we engage with. Our clients and partners can be assured that cleaner production, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and a commitment to an extensive recycling program leads to increased efficiency in materials usage. These savings are passed on to clients without compromising their projects.”

The whole Complete team is committed to creating processes that are environmentally responsible, from raw materials to client delivery.

*LGC is the acronym for Large-scale Generation Certificate from a Certified Power Plant. Certificates are generated for every MegaWatt of Power Generated (whether consumed or returned to the grid).

**GreenPower is a government-managed program that enables businesses to support renewable energy generation. Our partnership with ERM Power ensures Complete is purchasing energy that comes from genuinely renewable sources, with our fees going towards funding renewable energy projects and jobs. Without GreenPower, we could not guarantee that the energy we purchase from the grid is responsibly generated.

From Survive to Thrive

The global pandemic has created challenges for businesses and organisations across the world. We’re celebrating a few examples where our clients have tackled those challenges head-on (and we promise not to use the ‘P’ word!)

Marvel Bookbinding & Print Finishing

We’re proud to have developed a trusted partnership with Heidelberg West-based Bookbinding & Printfinishing company Marvel over the last 28 years. Not only are they Australia’s largest independently owned Bookbinder and Printfinisher, they are the only volume case-making business in the country (there are small companies that can handle up to 100 copies). We work together to manufacture approximately 5% of our finishing (the rest we keep in house): case-bound children’s books, cookbooks, specialty novels and corporate publications. With a shift back to on-shore printing in recent months, Marvel has created capacity to manufacture 30,000 hard-bound books a day in total.

A Local Government Authority asked us to deliver critical information to their stakeholders. Accounting for postal system delays due to Covid-19, we built a walking plan to hand deliver approximately 2,500 personalised flyers to targeted addresses with 100% delivery accuracy. We also provided post-delivery history, including photographic evidence for areas of concern. This makes the client aware of any areas they can optimise, such as removing dormant addresses, minimising waste and saving the client money.

A flower specialist business in the Dandenong Ranges  – who we have historically supported by producing event collateral and publication work – had all of its major events cancelled. The business swiftly moved to an online platform and increased sales by 300%! We supported the variable data-driven print production in line with new business needs.

Holgate Brewhouse

Woodend brewery Holgate Brewhouse had to react quickly to the closure of venues nationwide – and the extended closure of Victorian venues – some of whom they used to supply kegs to. In order to get great beer to people’s homes, they had to package more of their product and Complete has been able to support them by printing four-pack and six-pack sleeves.

These are great examples of businesses who have had their canvases wiped clean by 2020. They have stuck to the process, purpose and values that got them to where they are today, and they’ve changed the execution.

We can provide support and solutions to help your business shift or grow too.
We applaud many of our clients in achieving similar growth trends. We also appreciate that by the nature of their industry, some businesses have had no opportunity to thrive, and we want you to let us know if we can help. However challenging the future may look, we’ll contact you to discuss how we can support with a vast array of solutions.

Always ready for change.

We’re proud to have built strong foundations over the last 29 years. We’ve always held ourselves accountable to high standards throughout the business; clients, staff, finances, environmental impact, and our impressive Cheltenham manufacturing facility. Strong leadership and brilliant teams have grown our acorn into a substantial and sustainable tree.

The events of this year completely blindsided us – we won’t pretend they didn’t. But our company-wide character – open, positive and resolute – enabled us to adapt to change. What the future holds for all of us is unknown at this time, but we’re ready for change.

One of the biggest outcomes for us is the en-masse return of print to Australia. Due to Complete’s short production and shipping timelines – and pride in service, quality and value – we’re printing a lot of catalogues that businesses previously sent to China and beyond (and just as we are in this pre-Covid image below, we’re very happy about it).

We build in time for corrections, and value for environmentally-responsible, quality material to ensure an end product that everyone can celebrate. With the Australian Dollar currently hovering around $0.71 US cents, there has never been a better time to invest in Australian manufacturing! For us, trust is everything – from every employee, supplier and contributor to every member of a client’s workforce.

We were an early adopter in the digital print space, moving across with our first digital press from Fuji-Xerox in 2006, but our principles around service, quality and value have never changed. In fact, earlier this month, we passed another audit with flying colours – in ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environment) – certifying us as a trusted manufacturer. And we’ve now moved to a top of the class model with the new Xerox iGen 5 Digital Printing Press.

The new machine provides us with the ability to deliver higher volume digital print runs to customers, which enables more economic pricing. It also presents greater security in assurity of supply. We know we can deliver large volumes in very competitive turnaround times.

Every week, we print 45,000 menus for the Marley Spoon (Recipe & Meal Box Delivery) Melbourne site. Everything is done within a 24-hour window; from receiving the file (with 30 variants) to delivering the menus. It’s a big job, but a consistent process has enabled us to transition through change over the last 29 years so that we’re ready to take on jobs like Marley Spoon.

We want you to let us know if we can help your business. However challenging the future may look, we’ll contact you to discuss how we can support with a vast array of solutions.
